Self Assessment Tax Return - Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to complete a Self Assessment tax return?

You’ll usually need to file if you’re self-employed earning over £1,000, a company director with dividends, a landlord, or have income from savings, investments or capital gains not already taxed. See the full checklist above, or ask us if you’re unsure.

For the 2025/26 tax year, online returns and any tax owed are due by 31 January 2027. Paper returns are due 31 October 2026, and you must register by 5 October 2026 if this is your first return.

Fees depend on the complexity of your return — for example, a simple sole trader return costs less than one involving property income, dividends and capital gains. We offer fixed, upfront pricing — get a free quote to see your exact cost.

What happens if I miss the Self Assessment deadline?

HMRC issues an automatic £100 penalty for late filing, even if you don’t owe any tax, with further penalties the longer it’s left. If you’ve missed a deadline, get in touch — we can often help reduce the impact.

Yes — HMRC allows anyone to file their own return online. Many people do, but it’s easy to miss allowable expenses or make errors that trigger HMRC queries. A qualified accountant can save time and often more than covers their own fee.

A UTR (Unique Taxpayer Reference) is the 10-digit number HMRC uses to identify your tax records. You’re issued one automatically when you register for Self Assessment, usually arriving by post within around 10 working days.
