----DO YOU NEED TO REGISTER

Understanding VAT Registration

You must register for VAT once your taxable turnover goes over £90,000 in any rolling 12-month period — not the calendar or tax year, but any 12 months in a row. You also need to register if you expect to pass £90,000 in the next 30 days alone.

Because the test is based on a rolling period, it's easy to cross the threshold without noticing. Checking your turnover at the end of each month is the simplest way to stay ahead of it.

----DIGITAL BY DEFAULT

Making Tax Digital for VAT

Making Tax Digital (MTD) for VAT is HMRC's requirement for how VAT-registered businesses keep records and file returns. It applies to all VAT-registered businesses, including those registered voluntarily below the threshold.

In practice, it means two things: you need to keep your VAT records digitally, and you need to submit your VAT returns using MTD-compatible software rather than typing figures into HMRC's website. The filing deadlines themselves haven't changed — for most businesses, that's one calendar month and seven days after the end of each VAT period.

If you're not sure whether your current record-keeping meets these requirements, we can help you get set up so your VAT records are digital, organised and ready to file.

---THE OPTIONS

Common VAT Schemes

HMRC offers several VAT schemes designed to simplify how some businesses account for VAT. Which one suits you depends on your circumstances — here’s a plain-English overview.

SCHEME

Flat Rate Scheme

You pay a fixed percentage of your turnover as VAT, rather than working out the VAT on every sale and purchase. Designed to simplify VAT for smaller businesses that meet the eligibility rules.

SCHEME

Cash Accounting Scheme

You account for VAT based on when payments actually change hands, rather than invoice dates — which can help with cash flow if customers pay you slowly.

SCHEME

Annual Accounting Scheme

You submit one VAT return a year and make advance payments towards your bill, rather than filing quarterly. Suits some businesses that prefer fewer, more predictable submissions.

Each scheme has its own eligibility conditions and turnover limits, and the right choice depends entirely on your business. We can talk you through whether a scheme is worth considering for your situation.

—WHERE VAT GOES WRONG

Common VAT Problems We Help Businesses Avoid

Most VAT issues come down to records and timing rather than anything complicated. These are the ones we see most often.

Incomplete or disorganised VAT records that make returns harder to prepare accurately.

Missing or invalid VAT invoices, which affect what can be reclaimed.

Reclaiming input VAT incorrectly on purchases that don't qualify.

Missed VAT return or payment deadlines, which can lead to penalty points and interest.

Sales or purchases coded to the wrong VAT treatment.

Records that don't meet Making Tax Digital requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does a business need to register for VAT?

You must register once your taxable turnover goes over £90,000 in any rolling 12-month period, or if you expect to go over £90,000 in the next 30 days alone. You have 30 days from the end of the month you went over to register.

Yes. You can register voluntarily even if your turnover is below £90,000. Some businesses do this when most of their customers are VAT-registered and can reclaim the VAT charged to them. Whether it’s worth it depends on your situation.

Most businesses file VAT returns quarterly, though some file monthly or annually depending on their scheme. The usual deadline to file and pay is one calendar month and seven days after the end of the VAT period.

What is making tax digital for VAT?

Making Tax Digital for VAT is HMRC’s requirement for VAT-registered businesses to keep digital VAT records and submit returns using compatible software. It applies to all VAT-registered businesses, including those registered voluntarily below the threshold.

HMRC operates a points-based penalty system for late VAT return submissions, with penalties applied once you reach a points threshold. Interest can also be charged on late payments. Filing and paying on time avoids both.

VAT records generally need to be kept for at least 6 years, and under Making Tax Digital they need to be kept digitally.
